WPBKA Apiary | Hands-On Beekeeping and Training

Our Association Apiary

The Wakefield & Pontefract Beekeepers Association Apiary is the heart of our association – a place where learning, collaboration, and hands-on beekeeping come to life. Located in a peaceful corner of West Yorkshire, the apiary provides members with a safe, well-managed environment to work with bees, develop practical skills, and share experience.

A Space for Learning and Growth

The apiary plays a central role in our training programme. Under the guidance of experienced beekeepers, beginners and improvers alike can take part in practical sessions throughout the season. These sessions cover everything from hive inspections and swarm management to honey extraction and bee health checks.

By learning alongside others, new beekeepers gain confidence in handling bees and a deeper understanding of their seasonal rhythms.

Bee Health and Good Practice

The apiary is managed with care and attention to biosecurity. We promote good hygiene, disease awareness, and responsible management in line with BBKA and NBU guidance. Regular inspections help ensure the colonies remain healthy and productive, providing a valuable example of best practice for all members.

Community and Collaboration

The apiary isn’t just a training site – it’s a social hub. During open days and inspection sessions, members gather to share knowledge, compare notes, and celebrate the craft of beekeeping. It’s a welcoming space for questions, discovery, and a few inevitable bee-related surprises.

Visiting the Apiary

Access to the apiary is for members and guests by arrangement. Beginner course participants will have opportunities to attend supervised sessions during the beekeeping season. Protective clothing is essential, and new visitors are always accompanied by an experienced member.
