Training & Education

Learning Through Beekeeping

Beekeeping is both challenging and fascinating. The behaviour of honey bees – both as individuals and as part of a colony – can seem complex at first, and even the most experienced beekeepers never stop learning. Becoming a knowledgeable, confident, and responsible beekeeper takes time, guidance, and plenty of hands-on practice.

To support this journey, the Wakefield and Pontefract Beekeepers Association (WPBKA) operates its own training apiary in Thornes Park, Wakefield. The site is dedicated to education, demonstrations, and practical training for beekeepers at every level – from absolute beginners to seasoned apiarists refining their craft.

Beginners Course

Our popular Beekeeping Beginners Course combines theory and practice over eight weekly evening sessions. It’s an ideal introduction for anyone wishing to start keeping bees responsibly and with confidence.

Participants learn about:

  • Honey bee biology and colony behaviour
  • Equipment and hive management
  • Seasonal care and swarm control
  • Honey extraction and hygiene
  • Bee health, biosecurity, and legal responsibilities

The course is taught by experienced, nationally recognised beekeepers, always on hand to instruct, advise, and answer questions. Many of our members began with this course before going on to manage their own thriving hives.

Ongoing Training and Winter Talks

Learning doesn’t stop at the end of summer. During the autumn and winter months, WPBKA runs a lively programme of talks and training sessions, usually held once a month.

These evenings feature guest speakers covering topical issues in beekeeping, from hive management to new research in bee health. They’re also a chance to socialise, share ideas, and swap stories over tea and cake. (There are no meetings in December and January – the bees rest, and so do we!)

A full list of meetings and talks can be found on our Winter Talks page.

Further Learning Opportunities

In addition to the beginners course, WPBKA is developing a range of new training options, including:

  • BBKA Basic Certificate in Beekeeping
  • Bee Health and Disease Recognition
  • Queen Rearing Techniques
  • Additional short courses to follow

All courses will align with the British Beekeepers Association (BBKA) syllabuses, combining theory exams with practical assessments.

As a member of the Yorkshire Beekeepers Association (YBKA) – the largest regional beekeeping association in England – WPBKA members also have access to additional workshops, lectures, and training opportunities throughout the region.
